It would make sense, that signing up for a social media class would lead to registering to Twitter and Word press.   However, do all these internet connections take away from the face to face time we were once used to? I believe so; Facebook and Twitter have justified that in today’s society people would rather connect with you through an alert on your blackberry than face to face contact. I had always decided to opt out of adding the word, “tweet” to my vocabulary but when the professor says register as a student you must obey. I have let Facebook become a part of my life with an occasional few months when I decide to withdrawal through deleting my account.  It can be seen as signing your soul over to the devil because if you don’t know you can never actually delete your facebook account but rather just deactivate. I believe it started with an email, then to a text, moved to a facebook account, then to twitter, and finally to all compilations becoming merely another alert to your phone. How much more face time can be lost before we only have relations with our phone and computer screens.

That was a very thougthful post, Julia.
I would agree with most of what you say, but I have a slightly different perspective.
Through Facebook I can be a part of the live of my family, which is scattered around the world. I can connect almost instantly, and inexpensively, with friends and relatives, even if it’s just lurking in cyberspace.
Some of it can be a huge waste of time, I agree. But it’s all about how YOU use it and whether you want to let it suck out your brain with time wasting games or use it more productively to promote a cause, gather a group or seek support.

    take care m.

    Julia,
I have had similar concerns. Martin addressed these in an October 1 post on his blog, my(PR)palette, aptly titled How Much is Too Much. See the link on our Ning class site Blog page. http://martinspalette.blogspot.com/2009/09/how-much-is-too-much-social-media-that.html
Reading this helped me sort out my thoughts on this subject.
